GigHub System Inc. today launched Talk & Text Hub, a VoIP app that lets people add a United States or United Kingdom phone number to the smartphone they already own. The app is designed for three groups whose phone needs have changed the most: people who want more control over their number, freelancers working with clients abroad, and travelers who move between countries.
Users install the app, buy a number inside it, and the number is allocated instantly. They can then make and receive calls and texts through the app over Wi-Fi or mobile data. No physical SIM, eSIM or second handset is needed. Talk & Text Hub is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
A VoIP app in plain words
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. In simple terms, it means your call travels over the internet, the same way a video call or a message app does, instead of through a mobile network's SIM line.
With Talk & Text Hub, the phone number itself also lives in the app. It is a virtual number, sometimes called a VoIP number. It works like any other phone number: people can call it and text it, and you can call and text real mobile and landline numbers from it. The difference is that it does not need its own SIM card.
That is why one phone can now carry two numbers without any hardware change. Users can even hold several Talk & Text Hub numbers and switch between them in the same app.
For privacy: choose which number you share
Many everyday tasks ask for a phone number. Selling something online, booking a repair, meeting someone new or signing up for a service can all mean sharing it with people you may never speak to again.
A second number gives people a choice. They can share their Talk & Text Hub number for these moments and keep their main number for family, friends and long-term contacts. When they call or text from the app, the other person sees the Talk & Text Hub number. If a number is only needed for a short time, users can buy it for as little as 7 days and let it expire when they are done.
For freelancers: a local line for clients abroad
Remote work has made it normal for a designer in Bengaluru, a developer in Manila or a writer in Lagos to work with clients in New York or London. Email and video calls cover much of that work, but many clients still prefer to pick up the phone or send a quick text.
A 2nd line USA Number or UK number helps here. Clients see a familiar local number they can call and text back. The freelancer answers on the same phone they already use, through the app. Work conversations stay together in one place, separate from personal calls.
Freelancers who work with clients in both countries can keep a US number and a UK number side by side in the app.
For global travelers: a number ready before you land
Travelers often need a working local number the moment they arrive. They may need to call a hotel, reply to a taxi driver, confirm a restaurant booking or receive a message from a tour guide.
Traditionally, that meant buying a local SIM at the airport or setting up an eSIM, which not every phone supports. With Talk & Text Hub, a traveler heading to the USA or UK can buy a local number before the trip and use it over hotel Wi-Fi, café Wi-Fi or mobile data.
The same applies to people who stay longer, such as students, interns and new expats. They can use a local number from their first day while they decide on a long-term mobile plan.
Calling and plans
Calls from Talk & Text Hub can reach mobile and landline numbers, not just other app users. Calls between Talk & Text Hub users in the app are free. International calling is available to supported destinations, depending on the plan.
Plans are sold in the app in three ways:
- Number only: a US or UK number for 7, 15, 30 or 90 days.
- Number + Credit: a number bundled with a calling credit pack, ready to use straight away.
- Credit Top-Up: extra calling credit for a number you already have.
A US number starts at $1.99 for 7 days, and a UK number at $2.49 for 7 days. US calling credit starts at $2.99 for 60 minutes. Unlimited US and Canada calling packs are available for 30 and 90 days, and unlimited UK packs for the same periods. There are no long-term contracts.
The app needs an internet connection to work. Calls and texts over mobile data use the user's normal data allowance, so many travelers prefer Wi-Fi when it is available.
One app, several numbers
Inside the app, users can see each number they hold, how long it is valid, their call and message history and their remaining credit. This makes it practical to run more than one number at once, for example a UK number for a London client and a US number for an upcoming trip.
Talk & Text Hub launches with US and UK numbers. More information is available at talkandtexthub.com.
